The Leadership Summit Day#2

Note: Read each speaker section from the bottom up. Special thanks to guest tweeter and re-tweeters @jeremydelrio; @adamdurso @christtab @rafaelcastillo

Bono

- I @rafaelcastillo heard overtones of A Cry for A Cry over the last two days at the summit which I spoke at prayer meeting just b4 #tls09 wow
- Hybels: we need compassion AND justice to end stupid, extreme poverty in this generation. #tls09
- Hybels: God in his humor chose bono to get the poor on our radar. #tls09
- Hybels: I get paid too much. Willow is a resourced church. Do I do enough? #tls09
- Hybels: Jesus had 'blinding clarity' abt church's obligation 2 poor. Matt 25 #tls09
- bono: its not ok to have a child die for lack of immunizations and food. #tls09
- bono: anger re injustice gives me reason to get out of bed an hr early. stats have faces. we must make poverty history #tls09
- bono: nothing is dependent on you. but it's hard, because there is resistence. journey of justice&equality requires each of us
- bono: grace happens in community. #tls09
- soccer coach testimony: caring for the poor is more than giving money. give your life. #tls09
- bono: people want preachers to be honest. have a spirit of humility. be real. #tls09
- bono's "fear of denominationalism" - hybels is pushing back. bono: "i go where the life is... hard to take lifeless ceremony" #
- After banks crashed, it was so easy to bail out wall st with $700 billion. but it was so hard to find $ for ppl in a far off crisis
- "jesus created the church to exist for the world. ... why did it take a rock star?" #tls09
- testimony of infertile couple who gave their $ for fertility treatmnts to feed malnourished kids even if they nvr had their own child #tls09
- testimonies from pastors who were afraid to talk abt poverty ... until a rock start prophet brought conviction. WOW #tls09
- bono: intuition is better than intellect. u2's best work comes when we dont know what we are doing. #tls09
- interpreting bono: god was with the hungry etheopian who inspired the song, and hes with u when u remember him. #tls09
- Bono: i wrote the lyrics at an etheopian feeding station as ppl who walked all nite for food arrived. thats the street with no name. #tls09
- Bono: when we sing "where the streets have no name" god walks thru the room. humbling bc it's a bad lyric, but god uses it.
- A mark of spiritual maturity is whether people are releasing their resources for the least of these. #tls09
- When global poverty became personal, churches started making a difference. Find where God is working and join in. #tls09
- Bono: the concept of neighbor has completely changed. in the global village, Africa and US are now neighbors. #tls09
- Bono: The church is now in the lead, not the rear. we are now winning in some places because the church has woken up!
- Bono: in last 3yrs, the church has "ruined it for me." cant mock church anymore. "i didnt know the giant cld run that fast."
- Bono: has he seen a difference bw the disengaged, detached church 3 yrs ago, and the church fighting global poverty 2day?
- Hybels: Don't get heated re polarized extremes. "Resubmit our brains" to the HS so we can think abt both #tls09
- Hybels: No child shld EVER starve to death in our world. BUT we must also fix systems that are broken. Smart ppl shld do both.
- Hybels: there's a difference between life saving compassion a

Chip & Dean Heath

- Sculpting the path is necessary for leading change. Easier to lead people downhill than up. #tls09
- Stop blaming people for problems. Often its not a person problem, but a situation problem. Extend grace. Stop assuming worst. #tls09
-Built into a Growth Mindset is a tolerance for failure. Failing is a necessary step for success. "Work up to failure" to get better. #tls09
-Tiger Woods overhauled his swing bc he has a growth mindset. With work, I can become better (as a husband, leader, etc). #tls09
-Chip: When forewarned, ppl can deal with setbacks as the valley of insight. #tls09
-Start on a high (hope) and end on a high (confidence). In between, we go thru the valley of insight that comes during adversity. #tls09
-Chip: we owe it to ppl to prepare thm for adversity. my elephant (emotions) is skittish and lazy. prepare rider (will) for adversity #tlc09
-Dan: shrink the change to start the change. big changes come one step at a time. Cant go frm A to Z wo B, C, etc 1st. #tls09
-Dan: Lots of small actions lead to big results. Example economic recovery of Miner County, SD (1st proposed by a HS student) #tls09
-Switch: Big problems usually solved by sequence of small solutions. Asymmetry bw scale of problem and scale of solution. #tls09
-Chip: Lots of things are TBU (true but useless). Focus on what really matters.
-Chip: Ignore what doesn't work, and instead focus on bright spots. Study & clone it. Ex: solution focused therapy. Proof of capacity #tls09
-Dan: Change is filled with conflict. A rider on an elephant: interests must be aligned, otherwise elephant wont go where rider wants #tls09
-Chip: Not everyone resists change. Some welcome it. Can't have a family without embracing it. Why is some change harder than other? #tls09
-Chip & Dan Heath, authored Switch: How to change when change is hard. #tls09

David Gergen

-RT @AdamDurso "Bill Clinton was a man who had a 360 degree compass of the world and yet did not have an internal compass." #tls09 D. Gergen
-Gergen's concluding metaphor: We inherited a fire from others; add ur own log to the fire. #tls09
-Gergen, quoting Ghandi: Be the change you want to see in the world. #tls09
-Gergen: Faith, family, and friends are great anchors. Remind us that life is bigger than us. Prevent hubris and arrogance. #tls09
-Gergen: spiritual center provides moral compass, true north. develop good anchors to keep ego in check. nourish this in church. #tls09
-Gergen: frm church i want place 2find inner peace, something larger than me; to learn something from pas or readings; & moral compas #tls09
-Gergen: younger generation cares deeply abt social change. they r on a spiritual journey. i love this generation #tls09
-Gergen: consistent small behaviors lead to great impacts. #tls09
-Gergen: build time into every day 4reflection AND being with people u cherish. Ppl w loving, social relationships tend to live longer #tls09
-Gergen: Personal habits matter. Best leaders develop good habits that work for them. Self-discipline & phys fitness. #tls09
-Gergen: great speeches end with a call for action. "Come let us march," not just think. Argument AND emotional appeal. Head+heart #tls09
-Gergen: if speeches go longer than 30 mins, only 1/4 of audience still pays attn. Best speeches are 10-15 mins #tls09
- Gergen: great speeches depend on: believability of speaker, the logic of the msg, & its emotion. via Aristotle #tls09
- Gergen: who the speaker IS speaks as loudly as anything the speaker says. whose voice matters, tht u'll hear? depends on trust. #tls09
- Gergen: BUT symbols must be authentic. Symbols that are fake and phony -> mistrust. #tls09
- Gergen: Ghandi traded legal clothes for loin cloth. symbolic rejection of privilege and connection to commoners. #tls09
- Gergen: leadership is about trust and communications (not command). Be conscious of symbols. Give hope and inspiration. #tls09
- Gergen: if u want to go fast, go alone. if u want to go far, go together. #tls09
- Gergen: Leaders must also learn how to partner and collaborate BEYOND their team of leaders. #tls09
- Gergen: leadership doesnt have to be lonely. day of lone ranger leader is OVER. Best results come from great teams of leaders. #tls09
- Gergen: MLK's private life was chaotic. BUT he was a great public moral leaders. Reconciled the two bc he NVR claimed to be a saint. #tls09
- Gergen: maturity is coming to grips with ur flaws. be self-aware. we all have brite and dark side. integrate thm authentically #tls09
- Gergen: NOT all great leaders are deeply flawed. "Hard to find flaws" with Christ. #tls09
- Gergen: Clinton had character issues. Worst failure was to not confess and ask forgiveness. #tls09
- Gergen: INSPECT sometimes as important as RESPECT #tlc09
- Gergen: Reagan was sometimes too detached. Allowed others too much control. Dont trust to point of detachment. #tls09
- Gergen: Ford's niceness and decency was his strength, but also cld be weakness. sometimes naive. #tls09
- Gergen: Nixon had a dark side AND a brite side. Demons he cldn't control, and they won out. he authored his own tragedy. #tls09
- Gergen: Reagan - sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the far right hand is doing. #tls09
- Gergen: Reagan's optimism built community. people who can laugh together can pray together and bond #tls09
- Gergen: Pres Clinton - quick & tactical mind. Always willing to get back up. Tragic ... BUT resilient! #tl09
- Gergen: Re Pres Ford: back to the wall in the oval office is a tricky exercise.
- Gergen: Some1 who can look farther back can see further ahead. Learn from history
- Gergen: Nixon was "the best strategist" he ever saw. Cld see into the future and work backwards.
- Gergen: FDR stepped back from activity for his most inspired thought. While fishing had his aha moment -> strategy that won WW2 #tls09
- Gergen: learn leadership by reflective practice. Must do it, but continually read 2learn &grow. Not evry reader leads, but evry leadr reads
- Gergen: dont fool urself. set goals carefully and hold urself accountable to them. #tlc09
- Gergen: don't confuse motion with movement. choose goals tenaciously and pursue them. #tlc09
- Please welcome - guest Twitter @jeremydelrio as he tweets David Gergen talk @christtab
